PHUMC 2009 UMCOR TRIP

by Dewey Glasscock

On Sunday morning, November 8th eight of our members embarked for UMCOR Sager Brown at Baldwin, Louisiana arriving in time for our orientation and assignment of our living quarters. The depot opened in 1996 and this makes our seventh mission trip since we started in 2001. There were 3 churches represented plus the long term volunteers for a total of 27 workers for the week. Our attendees were:
Betty & Dewey Glasscock Marie Kayler
Debbie & Scott Moore Carolyn Schmidt
Syd Orton
Lyndal York
In addition to working in the warehouse checking and originating kits, some worked in the spacious sewing room. On Wednesday morning we all participated in the distribution of food to 685 needy of the immediate area of Baldwin who drove to the warehouse for the pickup – it was a quite an operation. On Thursday morning most of us visited the battered women’s shelter and several worked cleaning the floors and sorting clothing that had been donated for families. Thursday evening we participated in the Sager Brown vesper service which is planned by the volunteers.
The food and fellowship in the cafeteria was a highlight of each day and the housing was more than adequate. After hours, we played cards and worked on a tough jigsaw puzzle – which was still unfinished when we packed to leave Friday morning. By 8pm we were back at the church. Our next move is to plan for UMCOR 2010.
