Beliefs and Values
The United Methodist Church began as a movement, led by John Wesley in England, who had a goal to spread “scriptural holiness” throughout the land. John, his brother Charles, and a few other young men at Oxford University met regularly in the 1720s to improve themselves intellectually and spiritually and to help others become better Christians. Their habits of religious duty and their rules of personal conduct were systematic and methodical, and other students began to call them “Methodists.” The movement was a network of local societies with mission objectives, concerned with social justice issues.
Deliberately, the United Methodist Church has no single central office, no archbishop, and no pope. Boards and commissions guide agencies, which are composed of local church members and clergy.
We are, by design, a self-governing people dedicated to a life of Christian purpose – a life of participation and personal responsibility, of generosity, sacrifice and self-restraint, responding to the call of Jesus Christ.
We are a covenant community, concerned about God’s children everywhere. Where there is pain and suffering, we roll up our sleeves and go to work in our local communities and around the world.

Sacrament of Christian Baptism
We welcome people of faith into our churches. We welcome people who are searching for answers to life’s tough questions. We know what it’s like to feel alone and unsure – to need a welcoming place with open hearts, open minds, open doors.
When members join, they repent of their sins. They express a belief in God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. They express a belief of the Christian faith as contained in the Scriptures of the Old Testament and New Testament. They promise to follow God’s will and keep God’s commandments.
The Book of Discipline and The Book of Resolutions are updated every four years and contain the basic positions of the United Methodist Church. For more information go to www.umc.org
